Christmas at Lock Keeper’s Cottage – getting in the mood!

– Lucy Coleman

Who doesn’t like a Christmas-themed film, or a nostalgic sing-along over the festive period? Well, authors often find themselves indulging in a little Christmas vibe in the middle of summer. Gazing out of the open window with the sun blazing in and even the flowers in the garden beginning to wilt it’s easy for me to get in the mood.

Partly, that’s because I am a Christmasholic. What I love about my favourite season (even if it doesn’t snow…) is that everywhere you look you can see people doing things for others. A gift doesn’t have to come wrapped in paper and bows, it can be something as simple as a tap on the door and handing over a plate of mince pies fresh from the oven!

Christmas reminds us that it isn’t about receiving, it’s about giving and whether that’s time, energy, or love – it’s wonderful!

So here is my top six, go-to list and the one I used extensively while writing ‘Christmas at Lock Keeper’s Cottage’.

Heart-warming films:

  1. Love Actually
  2. The Holiday
  3. It’s a Wonderful Life
  4. Home Alone
  5. The Bishop’s Wife
  6. The Snowman

Songs of which I never tire of hearing, humming, or singing along:

  1. All I Want for Christmas is You
  2. Here with Me
  3. Too Lost in You
  4. When a Child is Born
  5. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow
  6. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

But my list of favourite songs is long and I also need to mention Hallelujah (performed by Pentatonix), O Come All Ye Faithful (performed by a choir – my mum loved this Christmas carol), virtually the entire soundtrack from Love Actually, Do They Know It’s Christmas… I could go on and on!

If a little of the feelgood, Christmas spirit could linger all year-round, maybe life would be that little bit sweeter. And it’s not about how much money you have, but how much love you have, to share with those around you!

… and it’s spending some quality time with the man who has captured her heart.

Sending a warm, festive hug to you all!
