Donovan Cook’s Top 5 Non-Fiction Viking Reading Recommendations

  1. The Viking Anthology by Bibliotech

This book is a treasure trove of Norse mythology and Icelandic Sagas. It contains all of the sagas written by Snorri Sturluson and the Icelandic Sagas and it helped me get a better understanding of the mythology and of what the daily lives of the people in that period might have been like.

  1. The Age of the Vikings by Anders Winroth

A wonderful book filled with archeologic and historical research which was great for helping me understand the different aspects of the lives of the Scandinavian people, from how they traded to what life on the farm was like.

  1. Vikings at War by Kim Hjardar & Vegard Vike

This book gave me a better understanding of Viking warfare, from how they might have trained children and how sports played a crucial role in that, the general formation of the shield wall. It was also great for learning about the history between Denmark and Francia, talking about the relationships between the different kings and emperors and the many battles fought between them.

  1. The Children of Ash & Elm by Neil Price

Another great book for those wanting to learn more about the Vikings and what may have motivated them. It gives an amazing insight into the lives of the Scandinavian people, how they lived their lives, dealt with their dead and how it all came to an end.

  1. The Heimskringla and the Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson

Again, another fantastic book for anyone who wants to learn more about Norse mythology and the different interpretations of those stories.
